UK grocery inflation edges higher over last month, says Worldpanel

Worldpanel by Numerator said higher prices cut into volumes as grocery sales rose just 2.0% and deal spending climbed 7% year on year.

  • On Tuesday, market researcher Worldpanel by Numerator reported British grocery inflation rose to 2.3% year-on-year over the four weeks to Sept. 6, up from 2.1% the previous month.
  • Households mitigated inflation by prioritizing discounts, as spending on promotional deals surged by £243 million, a 7% increase, while full-price sales growth lagged at just 1.4%.
  • Ocado led retailer growth with a 13.3% sales rise over 12 weeks, while Marks & Spencer saw grocery sales climb 14.8% and Asda returned to growth with a 0.1% increase.
  • Consumer spending headwinds will strengthen from October as most households face rising energy bills, despite Prime Minister Andy Burnham prioritizing cost-of-living efforts.
  • The Food and Drink Federation projects food price inflation could climb to nearly 4% by year-end and exceed 6% by mid-2027, driven by geopolitical tensions and El Niño weather patterns.
