UK Charity Shop Chain Announces 150 Closures Amid £3.3m Loss
The charity said rising costs and changing customer habits made shop returns unsustainable as retail turnover rose 1.5% to £236 million.
The British Heart Foundation announced plans to close 150 shops by March 2028, citing financial returns the UK's largest charity retailer deemed "not sustainable" amid rising operating costs.
During the year ending March 2026, retail costs rose 5% to £240m while turnover increased only 1.5% to £236m, leaving expenditure of £441m exceeding income of £416m.
Despite retail challenges, the charity awarded £103m in new research grants, expanding its research portfolio to £485m, with £17.4m in investment gains helping offset overall expenditure.
BHF Chief Executive Charmaine Griffiths cited "significant external pressures," stating the closures aim to protect "sustainable income for lifesaving research" following £1.1m in redundancy payments.
While 14 shops have already shut, the charity has not publicly identified which specific locations face closure, noting that implementation will "likely result in limited recovery.
