Crews Continue Cleanup After EF0 Tornado Touches Down in Southern Ontario
The project said both storms caused only minor damage and no survey teams are planned unless more significant evidence emerges.
On Saturday, Aug. 8, the Northern Tornadoes Project confirmed two EF0 tornadoes struck Southwestern Ontario, one in Woodstock and another in Lindsay, as severe storms moved through the region.
Environment Canada issued tornado warnings during Saturday's storms, though some Woodstock residents reported receiving alerts only after the weather arrived. Meteorologist Geoff Coulson explained weaker tornadoes are harder to detect than well-defined supercells.
Uprooted trees and flooded streets marked Woodstock's impact, with city crews spending the weekend clearing debris from parks and boulevards. Lansdowne Avenue temporarily became a river, forcing drivers to seek alternate routes.
Separately, a tornado touched down near the Scugog River in Lindsay shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, with the NTP assigning a preliminary EF0 rating to the event.
NTP executive director David Sills indicated some Woodstock damage may have been caused by 'non-tornadic winds,' such as downbursts, while residents described intense conditions—one family paddled a kayak down a flooded street.
