Tropical shark caught off Massachusetts could be sign of warming waters
Scientists said the five-foot juvenile was unusual that far north and adds to evidence that warming oceans are moving marine life north.
- Massachusetts sport fishermen Nate Rouette and his brother Nelson caught and released a five-foot juvenile tiger shark off Cape Cod in late July, describing the surprise encounter as a thrill after seeking common brown sharks.
- Scientists noted the appearance of this tropical species off Falmouth indicates warming seas caused by climate change, reflecting northward shifts in marine life observed in recent years as ocean conditions become more hospitable.
- Tiger sharks can grow to more than 15 feet and 1,400 pounds, consuming fish and man-made items like license plates and shoes. Though adults are more dangerous to humans than most species, unprovoked fatal bites remain rare.
- John Chisholm, adjunct scientist at the New England Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, said young tiger sharks are historically less common in northern waters, with rising temperatures making the Atlantic Ocean increasingly hospitable.
- Other marine species including great whites and black sea bass have increasingly migrated north toward New Hampshire and Maine in recent years, demonstrating how warming oceans are reshaping New England's coastal ecosystems.
