Girl, 16, Dies After Collapsing During Wexford GAA Match
Taghmon-Camross LGFA said the club was heartbroken as emergency crews used a defibrillator several times before she was taken to hospital.
On Tuesday, 16-year-old Aoibheann Clarke collapsed during the minor division 6 ladies football shield final in Taghmon. She was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, where she was subsequently pronounced dead.
Recognized as an 'outstanding sports star,' Clarke played for Taghmon-Camross LGFA, All Blacks AFC, and Wexford FC. Recently, she helped Wexford FC capture the FAI Women's U19 Inter-League title.
During injury time, the teenager was immediately attended to on the pitch. An advanced paramedic arrived within five minutes, and a defibrillator was used several times before transport to the hospital.
Taghmon-Camross LGFA stated the club is 'heartbroken by the tragic loss of a cherished member,' while All Blacks AFC said, 'To say we are heartbroken is an understatement.'
Garda are treating the incident as a 'personal tragedy,' as the community rallies behind the Clarke family. A book of condolences opens on Wednesday at Taghmon-Camross GAA Club.
