Peter Cullen, prolific voice actor who gave Optimus Prime his authoritative baritone, has died
The Canadian actor voiced Optimus Prime and Eeyore for decades, and his work helped Transformers films gross more than $3 billion worldwide.
- Voice actor Peter Cullen, who brought Optimus Prime to life for 40 years, died Wednesday at his Los Angeles home at age 85, agent Kevin Motley confirmed.
- To portray Optimus Prime, Cullen channeled his older brother, Larry, a decorated U.S. Marine who served in Vietnam from 1965-68, whom he viewed as a personal superhero.
- Beyond Transformers, Cullen voiced the gloomy Eeyore in numerous Winnie-the-Pooh projects and created the monster's clicking sounds in the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring Predator .
- His family asked that fans 'honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty' and 'be strong enough to be gentle.'
- Cullen's prolific career spanned from his 1967 start on The Buddies to modern roles, leaving behind survivors Angus, Claire, Pilar, and Clay.
