Toronto hospital to greatly expand permanent housing program that reduces ER visits
Preliminary data show 48 residents had 52% fewer emergency visits and a 79% drop in hospital stays after moving in.
On Thursday, October 1, 2026, the University Hospital Network announced plans to expand its Dunn House program, which provides permanent housing for homeless individuals who frequently visit emergency departments, to support 300 people.
Dr. Andrew Boozary of the University Hospital Network described the initiative as a humane and cost-effective approach to supporting vulnerable populations, with 51 residents currently in the facility.
Preliminary data for 48 residents shows emergency room visits dropped 52 per cent after moving into Dunn House, while hospital stay lengths decreased 79 per cent.
Before moving in, the 48 patients racked up $2.1 million in annual hospital costs, but the hospital saved $1.66 million in the year following their intake.
Federal and provincial governments, the city, and the hospital will partner to scale the Dunn House model to help 300 people, positioning the program as a replicable housing solution.
