Tommy John Says 'Goodbye' on Yankees' Old-Timers' Day Amid Health Battle
On Saturday, 83-year-old Tommy John sent an emotional farewell message to the New York Yankees on Old-Timers' Day from his home in Bradenton, Florida, acknowledging his failing health.
John is the namesake for the innovative elbow ligament replacement surgery performed by Frank Jobe 50 years ago, which has helped thousands of pitchers prolong their professional careers.
Following the 1974 experimental procedure, the pitcher returned to the mound for 14 years, winning 164 more games to complete a 26-year career that included eight seasons with the Yankees.
In the letter released by the organization, John thanked Steinbrenner and Frank Jobe, saying, "Thanks to Dr. Jobe, who saved my arm & made it possible for me to continue pitching."
Concluding his message, John thanked the Yankees & the Steinbrenner family, reflecting on his roots in Terre Haute, Indiana, and telling fans, "I will never forget you.
