Pirates acquire veteran catcher Christian Bethancourt from Yankees in exchange for cash
Bethancourt, 34, brings 427 games of major league experience as Pittsburgh seeks cover for Endy Rodriguez’s left hip inflammation.
On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired veteran catcher Christian Bethancourt from the New York Yankees in exchange for cash considerations.
Pittsburgh sought additional depth at catcher as Endy Rodriguez remains on the 10-day injured list with left hip inflammation, an issue he has managed since June.
The 34-year-old Bethancourt has appeared in 427 major league games across eight seasons, recording 284 hits and 35 home runs while playing for the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins.
Management assigned Bethancourt to Triple-A Indianapolis, though he will join the major league taxi squad for the upcoming road series against the Los Angeles Dodgers starting August 21.
Pirates senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomcyzk noted Rodriguez has sought second opinions regarding his hip condition, with the team potentially activating him on August 20 following their day off.
