Thousands Head to Chincoteague for the Pony Swim, but Wednesday Isn’t the Best Day to Go
Thousands of people gather early at the Chincoteague waterfront to watch the brief wild pony swim across the Assateague Channel guided by the Saltwater Cowboys.
Many spectators without prime waterfront spots see the ponies only as tiny moving specks on the water due to the distance and crowd size.
A large video screen installed by the town offers close-up views of the swim for those farther from the action.
After the swim, the ponies parade through Chincoteague to holding pens, and on Friday, the Saltwater Cowboys return them to Assateague Island when crowds are often smaller and viewing is easier.
