Deadline Looms as Trump’s 50 per Cent Tariffs Set to Kick in Just After Midnight
Negotiators say a deal is close as 50% duties on $20 billion in Canadian imports await a Saturday deadline, officials said.
Unless negotiators finalize a deal by 12:01 a.m. ET Saturday, President Donald Trump's planned 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods will take effect, following a recent deadline postponement.
Trump invoked the Great Depression-era Section 338 of the Tariff Act in July to impose the duties, citing alleged Canadian discrimination against U.S. dairy, auto, and alcohol sectors.
Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Canadian chief negotiator Janice Charette held multiple meetings in Washington with Trade Representative Jamieson Greer this week, with LeBlanc describing talks as "very close."
Ongoing negotiations center on existing sectoral tariffs covering Canadian steel, aluminum, and lumber, with reports suggesting the administration may revive the Keystone XL pipeline project to finalize the deal.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday the pending agreement aims to "reinforce that Canadian advantage," while businesses warn that failing to reach a deal could disrupt established cross-border supply chains.
