Tanzania Removes Special Visa Clearance for Nigerians
Nigerian travellers can now apply through Tanzania’s standard visa process, after officials ended a referral system that required extra clearance.
The Tanzania Immigration Services Department removed Nigeria from its Referred Visa Category, allowing Nigerian nationals to use standard visa application procedures for travel to the United Republic effective immediately.
Before this change, Nigerians faced a lengthier clearance process requiring special approval from the Commissioner General of Immigration or the Commissioner of Immigration before making travel arrangements.
Chief Spokesperson ACI Paul Mselle signed the public notice on Friday, September 25, 2026, which the Tanzania Immigration Services Department subsequently published on its official handle on Monday.
Eligible applicants from Nigeria can now obtain visas through the official immigration online portal or at designated entry points, bypassing the previous additional clearance requirement entirely.
While Nigeria was removed, other nations including Afghanistan, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Eritrea remain subject to the Referred Visa Category requirements, continuing to face the more demanding clearance process.
