Swedes vote in election that could usher far right into government
Swedes face a tight election on September 13, 2026, focused on whether to include the far-right Sweden Democrats, with about 19% voter support, in the government, which could give them cabinet positions and potentially a second term for Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson credits cooperation with the Sweden Democrat leader since 2022 for economic growth, lower energy and food prices, reduced gang crime, and low asylum numbers, and his center-right coalition seeks to continue this partnership.
In the parliamentary election in Sweden, the social democrats of ex-government leader Magdalena Andersson have, according to the forecast, become the strongest force. According to the Swedish channel SVT, the party came to 28.4 percent of the votes - whether this is enough for a government formation, but is completely open.
Elections in Sweden face the left and the right in tight elections. The extreme right seeks to enter the government for the first time in the history of the country.
