  • Payments firm Stripe agreed to acquire AI hub OpenRouter in a deal reportedly worth slightly more than $8 billion, deepening the California-headquartered fintech's push into artificial intelligence.
  • Founded in 2023, OpenRouter processes more than 10 trillion tokens daily from more than 400 AI models for over 10 million developers, functioning as a popular testing ground for routing queries.
  • "Tokens are the central currency for companies building with AI," Stripe CEO Patrick Collison said, as the firm has launched token billing products to optimize consumption.
  • A Deloitte report in March projected companies with at least $500m annual revenue will consume more than 10 billion tokens monthly by 2028, while OpenRouter has backing from Menlo Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz.
  • Stripe, valued at $159 billion earlier this year, generated $1.9 trillion in volume last year and has made a joint offer with Advent International to acquire PayPal for more than $53 billion, according to Reuters.
