Ottawa to Announce Extension of Gas Tax Holiday

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced an extension of the federal gas tax holiday in Ottawa on Wednesday, continuing relief on fuel costs for Canadian families and businesses.
The Liberals suspended the 10-cent excise tax on gas and four cents on diesel in April when the Iran war spiked global fuel prices, with the suspension originally set to end after Labour Day.
Noah Jarvis of The Canadian Taxpayers Federation said pickup truck owners save about $470 annually while families filling a minivan save about $400, as the tax break cuts 10 cents per litre on gas and four cents on diesel.
A government official confirmed the tax will not be reimposed next week, preventing the excise tax from returning immediately after the original Labour Day expiration date.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre seeks extension until at least July 1, 2027, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to extend the suspension until Jan. 1, 2027, or make it permanent.
