States Sue to Block Trump's Rollback of Power Plant Emission Rules
The states say the repeal could add millions of tons of emissions and cost industry more than $300 billion, according to the EPA.
On Thursday, a coalition of 25 states and cities sued the Trump administration, challenging the Environmental Protection Agency's repeal of rules limiting greenhouse gas emissions from coal and gas-fired power plants.
The repeal represents a fundamental shift from efforts by Democratic Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama to regulate heat-trapping gases, though the EPA claims the move saves the industry more than $300 billion.
New York Attorney General Letitia James said the administration is displaying "callous disregard" for public health, arguing that "gutting one of the country's most significant climate protections" will worsen the crisis.
Abre Conner, the NAACP's director of environmental and climate justice, hailed the lawsuit as the coalition petitioned the Court of Appeals for the District to strike down the repeal.
Beyond this challenge, the coalition plans to sue over the EPA's failure to regulate pollution from gas-powered plants, contributing to a broader wave of climate change litigation nationwide.
