Spain installs floating barrier in Ceuta after calm night following border rush

Spain is installing the barrier after about 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco in 24 hours, with at least 67 deaths reported.

  • On Saturday, August 1, Spanish Civil Guard police began installing a 500m floating barrier at the Tarajal breakwater in Ceuta to prevent further unauthorized migrant crossings from Morocco.
  • Around 60,000 people crossed into Spain starting Thursday, July 30, in a mass rush that left at least 67 people dead, prompting the immediate installation of the new barrier.
  • Twenty-Two European Union governments requested an emergency meeting on Friday, July 31, urging the bloc to assist Madrid in regaining control of the border, while Italy suspended Schengen travel arrangements with Spain.
  • Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez criticized governments calling for Spain's exclusion from the Schengen area, calling such reactions "selfish" and "unlawful" while rejecting claims residency programs encouraged the surge.
  • Designed to stand 30 to 70 centimeters above water and extend one meter below the surface, the pneumatic barrier includes a channel allowing Civil Guard vessels to patrol the breakwater effectively.
