August 2026 Full Moon to Bring Lunar Eclipse. When Ohio Will See It
About 96% of the Moon will enter Earth’s umbra, and the eclipse will be safe to watch without special equipment, NASA said.
- A deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible across the United States during the August full moon, beginning at 9:23 p.m. EST on Aug 27. NASA indicates Ohio offers favorable conditions for viewing.
- Lunar eclipses occur when Earth positions itself between the Sun and Moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface. This event is not technically a total lunar eclipse because a small section of the Moon remains outside Earth's darkest shadow.
- About 96% of the Moon's surface will enter Earth's darkest shadow, reaching maximum peak at 12:12 a.m. EST on Aug 28. The eclipse is safe to view with the naked eye without specialist equipment.
- For the best viewing experience, find an elevated location with a clear view toward the west, such as Burr Oak State Park or Wayne National Forest. These Ohio destinations offer dark skies with minimal light pollution.
- The August full moon will rise soon with peak illumination early Aug 28, known as the sturgeon moon. The September full moon will peak on September 26, 2026, continuing the lunar cycle and offering regular sky-gazing opportunities.
