Sophia Space and Redwire Team Up to Advance Orbital Data Center Infrastructure
The companies will pursue demonstration missions and longer-term orbital data center architectures, aiming to scale in-space AI and edge computing.
On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Sophia Space and Redwire Corporation signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance scalable computing infrastructure in orbit, combining modular compute architecture with space engineering capabilities.
The partnership aims to address the central challenge facing the orbital computing market: shifting from individual technology demonstrations toward repeatable, scalable infrastructure needed for the global build-out of orbital data centers.
Sophia Space utilizes its TILE architecture to integrate high-performance computing, while Redwire contributes expertise in deployable space systems, solar power generation, and thermal management supporting AI inference and edge computing in orbit.
"The question now is how quickly we can scale it," said Rob DeMillo, CEO and Cofounder of Sophia Space. The companies intend to pursue commercial and U.S. government opportunities including DARPA and the National Reconnaissance Office.
"Space infrastructure can scale critical capacity beyond the constraints of terrestrial infrastructure," said Al Tadros, Chief Technology Officer, Redwire Space. This collaboration could unlock significant economic value through next-generation architectures.
