Social Security Benefits in 2027: See What's Really Changing - FINCHANNEL
The Senior Citizens League lowered its estimate from 3.8% as federal inflation data continue to shape the official adjustment, due Oct. 14.
The Social Security Administration will announce the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment on October 14, with current forecasts projecting a 3.6% increase for 75 million beneficiaries.
Annual adjustments depend on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers , which the SSA calculates by comparing third-quarter inflation averages with the previous year's corresponding period.
The projected 3.6% increase could boost average retired worker benefits by about $75 monthly, exceeding the 2.8% adjustment beneficiaries received in 2026 and helping offset rising housing and healthcare costs.
Alongside the COLA announcement, the SSA will release critical 2027 updates including the wage cap—currently $184,500—and earnings thresholds for work credits affecting higher earners and working beneficiaries.
Despite headlines about potential benefit reductions, no broad cuts have been approved for 2027; SSA analyses modeling reforms represent planning scenarios, not current policy, as payroll taxes remain sufficient to cover scheduled benefits.
