Crews Responding to New Wildfire North of Port Alberni
Fire crews and helicopters are responding as officials say the 0.2-hectare blaze is under investigation and not a threat to public safety.
A 0.2-hectare wildfire, labeled V71736, is burning in the Beaufort Range northwest of Port Alberni in the Hal Creek area, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service .
Following a brief thunder and lightning event on Friday afternoon, numerous calls were made to first responders about the lightning strike, with the fire discovered shortly after.
BCWS classifies the blaze as "out of control," meaning it is expected to spread, while smoke remains visible from Port Alberni and Sproat Lake.
Ground personnel were deployed to the scene, and residents observed at least two helicopters fighting the fire, which the service currently labels "under investigation."
The fire poses no threat to public safety or critical infrastructure, according to BCWS, while the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District Emergency Program provides updates on Facebook.
