Shopify Extends WebMCP Into Checkout For Browser Agents
The update lets authorized agents inspect, update and submit checkout details with three tools, as Shopify expands agentic commerce beyond product search and carts.
On Monday, e-commerce platform Shopify announced that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on its merchants' sites, extending capabilities beyond product searching to full transaction processing.
While some retailers like Amazon and Adidas are blocking AI agents from making purchases on their platforms, Shopify has moved in the opposite direction, permitting these tools to finalize transactions directly.
The platform introduced WebMCP tools—get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout—to facilitate checkout, including Shop Pay, leveraging the Universal Commerce Protocol to process orders without scraping webpages.
"These WebMCP tools provide structured and efficient APIs," Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager at Shopify, wrote on X, noting the feature is rolling out to all eligible merchants.
Top AI agents such as Muse and Instinct already maintain direct partnerships with Shopify for agentic commerce, with the Instinct partnership announced today.
As part of the Universal Commerce Protocol, Shopify AI Agents no longer only allows product search and storage in the shopping cart, but also direct purchase, for example via Shop Pay. There are three new tools for this.
