She survived Harvey Carignan’s hammer. Her testimony ended his killing spree
Her identification helped investigators link Carignan to at least three other hammer attacks and murders, ending a nationwide manhunt for the serial killer.
A 71-year-old St. Cloud woman identified convicted serial killer Harvey Carignan as her assailant in a September 1974 attack, providing her first interview to Forum News Service since the assault.
From ages 12 to 19, Carignan was institutionalized at the Mandan State Industrial School, a facility for juvenile offenders where he remained for nearly seven years during critical developmental years.
During the September 1974 assault, Carignan abducted the nursing student from a Sears parking lot, drove her to a remote area, and struck her in the back of the head with a hammer.
The survivor's identification linked Carignan to other hammer attacks and connected him to the 1973 murder of Kathleen Miller and the 1972 murder of Laura Leslie Brock in Washington.
Known as "The Want Ad Killer" and "Harv the Hammer," Carignan died in prison in 2023 at 95 years old, ending decades of violent crimes across the United States.
