Shaquille O’Neal Reveals Marvel’s Surprising Reason for Rejecting Him
Shaq said Marvel passed on his Avengers pitch because audiences would recognize him, and he now wants an action role with Dwayne Johnson.
NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal revealed Marvel rejected his long-standing hopes of joining the Avengers franchise, citing concerns that his iconic appearance would distract audiences from the film's narrative.
Though O'Neal previously portrayed a superhero in the 1997 film Steel, he has spent years lobbying Marvel for an Avengers role, a desire he first expressed publicly in a 2018 interview.
Hollywood executives explained to the 54-year-old that his massive frame and high recognizability would make it impossible for viewers to accept him as a fictional character, jokingly calling him 'too bigtime.'
Turning his attention elsewhere, O'Neal expressed interest in collaborating with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, specifically to beat him up on screen during a future film.
The basketball Hall of Famer continues his acting career with recent appearances in Scary Movie and a set role in the upcoming Grown Ups 3, moving past his stalled MCU dreams.
