Semi-pro footballer jailed after being filmed driving at 191mph on motorway
Police found Charlton drove at more than 190 mph and tried to avoid penalties by paying others to take his points.
On Wednesday, Leeds Crown Court sentenced semi-pro footballer Connor Charlton, 32, from Hunslet, to four years in prison and a four-year, seven-month driving ban for dangerous driving offences.
Charlton, who plays for Nostell Miners Welfare, admitted to 10 counts of dangerous driving and four counts of perverting the course of justice involving a speeding points scam where others took penalty points for cash.
Police analysis of his BMW revealed he drove at speeds up to 190mph on West Yorkshire roads including the M1 and M62, while multiple videos captured the dangerous maneuvers.
RAC head of policy Simon Williams described the case as "chilling," calling on the Government to mandate "Intervening Intelligent Speed Assistance" technology to prevent repeat offenders from exceeding speed limits.
Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore emphasized the need for tougher sentencing frameworks, stating that driving at such speeds "puts the lives of innocent motorists, passengers and pedestrians at risk.
