West Ham Urges Fans to Stop Singing Chant Containing 'Anti-Palestine Message'
West Ham said the chant was offensive and divisive and urged supporters to back the team without creating division or causing offence.
On Thursday, West Ham United issued a statement calling on supporters to stop singing an "offensive and divisive" chant containing an anti-Palestine message following the club's opening EFL Championship match at Burnley on Sunday.
West Ham, relegated from the Premier League last season, stated it was "aware of an offensive and divisive chant" and emphasized the club was built on values of "togetherness, respect and a sense of community."
Equality and inclusion are "at the heart of the Club," West Ham implored fans to "represent the club in the right way," while asking supporters to show support with "pride, passion and respect."
Ahead of hosting London rivals Charlton Athletic this Saturday at the London Stadium, the club urged supporters to avoid behavior that creates division, encouraging fans to sing loud and proud "but never in a way that causes offence."
The squad includes Israel winger Manor Solomon, who joined from Tottenham on a three-year deal, and West Ham stated all supporters should be free to enjoy football "without fear, discrimination or abuse.
