Russia opens winter assault on Ukraine's power grid
Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said nearly 190 drones and missiles hit power sites across 11 regions, leaving emergency outages and seven people dead.
On Wednesday, Russia launched a massive air assault against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, killing seven people and forcing emergency power outages in Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Zhytomyr regions.
Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi described the barrage as the beginning of a renewed fall-winter campaign, with temperatures forecast to drop to freezing across the country from October 1-3.
Presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov reported Russia's first use of jet-powered drones equipped with a specialized 40-kilogram shaped-charge warhead designed to sever high-voltage pylons and infrastructure.
The overnight assault involved 188 drones and ballistic missiles, hitting critical infrastructure across 11 regions. In Vyshhorod, a 14-year-old was killed when the attack struck a private house.
Ukraine has yet to secure funding for its $6.2 billion energy resilience plan, leaving the system exposed as winter approaches. Officials struggle to counter jet-powered drones that fly beyond the reach of previously used defense methods.
Russia has deployed a special jet drone equipped with a cumulative warhead designed to destroy high-voltage power lines and steel bridge structures for the first time, Serhiy Beskrestnov, President Zelensky’s defense technology adviser, announced. The deployment of the new weapon came amid a series of Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure on a scale not seen in months, the Kyiv Independent reported.
