Odisha Chief Electoral Officer Gopalan Applies for Voluntary Retirement After SIR
Gopalan cited personal and health reasons as opposition parties alleged more than 27.50 lakh voters were excluded in the revision process.
On Thursday, Odisha Chief Electoral Officer R.S. Gopalan applied for voluntary retirement from government service, citing personal reasons nearly 21 months before his scheduled superannuation.
Gopalan stated he planned to resign after completing the "major task" of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, finalized September 21; he also holds the additional charge of secretary of the Excise Department.
Opposition parties BJD and Congress criticized the SIR process, alleging over 27.50 lakh voters were excluded; the BJD claimed the CEO "manipulated" voter data, though Gopalan denied his resignation was linked to these demands.
Following the departure of Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena, an Odisha-cadre IPS officer, the Centre recently accepted his resignation and forwarded it to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Gopalan, who has served as Odisha CEO for two years, plans to focus on his family in Bhubaneswar, noting he completed 25 years in government service on September 2, prompting his retirement decision.
