River otter spotted in the Bronx for 1st time in 100 years, Bronx Zoo says

A motion-activated camera captured the animal, marking the first documented river otter in the borough in about 100 years, officials said.

  • On June 23, a motion-activated camera monitored by the Wildlife Conservation Society Bronx Zoo captured a North American river otter along the Bronx River, marking the species' first documented appearance in the borough in 100 years.
  • Otters were historically common throughout New York waterways but disappeared due to pollution, habitat degradation, and unregulated trapping, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society. The Bronx River has undergone decades of restoration efforts.
  • Local scientist Hawkins, a graduate of the Ohio Advanced Inquiry Program hosted at the Bronx Zoo, captured the images using a motion-activated camera. "Knowing this may be the first documented river otter in the Bronx in generations was an incredible moment," Hawkins said.
  • Bronx Zoo Director Craig Piper called the return a "win for both wildlife and people," crediting decades of restoration work. Interim Executive Director Javier Lopez of the Bronx River Alliance noted the milestone honors communities fighting for 50 years to restore the river.
  • Otters serve as indicators of healthy freshwater ecosystems because they require clean water, abundant fish, and intact habitats. About 20 years ago, beavers also returned to the Bronx River, demonstrating the potential for wildlife to thrive in New York City waterways.
