Due to low water levels, ships on the IJssel can only sail in the direction of Arnhem between Zutphen and Westervoort starting Friday, reports Rijkswaterstaat (RWS). In some places, the navigation channel in the river is too shallow and too narrow. This makes two-way traffic unsafe, according to RWS.

Rijkswaterstaat is making a far-reaching decision for the safety of shipping on the IJssel. Effective Friday, one-way traffic is in effect for the first time. For the time being, ships are only permitted to sail between Zutphen and Westervoort in the direction of Arnhem.
