Report: Nearly 1 in 3 Teachers Still Use ‘Discredited’ Reading Methods
A Fordham Institute survey of more than 1,200 educators found 30% still favor cueing alongside phonics, with lower adoption in low-income schools.
- On Tuesday, the Fordham Institute released a report finding that about a third of K-3 teachers are not fully committed to the science of reading, with many still using "discredited" methods to teach students.
- Researchers surveyed more than 1,200 K-3 educators, finding that 93% utilize multiple reading curricula, while 30% of teachers reported favoring both phonics and cueing—a practice encouraging students to guess unfamiliar words through pictures.
- The report found that more than 40% of teachers hadn't "fully internalized the importance of knowledge and vocabulary to reading comprehension," revealing inconsistent teacher knowledge across the field.
- Findings revealed a "substantial difference that will have dire consequences for poor students," with teacher commitment to science-based reading principles 9 to 15 percentage points lower in low-income schools than affluent districts.
- Report co-author David Griffith attributed implementation hurdles to the "chaotic information environment" teachers face, emphasizing that students "need to know how to decode words" to successfully learn to read.
