Remembering the Hump, eight decades on
The 85th anniversary of the Flying Tigers' arrival in China to help in the war against Japanese aggression is being commemorated this year.
The lesser-known but important 'Hump' airlift operation began in April 1942 with fewer than 30 aircraft supporting China.
The Flying Tigers were a combat team, while the 'Hump' airlift involved different personnel transporting cargo.
U.S. records show that approximately 509 to 594 aircraft were lost and more than 1,300 aircrew died, with several hundred more missing during the airlift operation.
