Rasmussen Has No-Hit Bid for 7 2/3 Innings, Rays Open AL Division Series with a 1-0 Win over Yanks
Rasmussen struck out nine and walked two while Jonathan Aranda’s third-inning homer supplied the only run.
On Saturday, Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Drew Rasmussen carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning of American League Division Series Game 1, helping the Rays secure a 1-0 lead over the New York Yankees at Tropicana Field.
Jonathan Aranda provided the Rays' only run with a third-inning solo home run off Yankees starter Gerrit Cole, while New York's lineup notably lacked three-time AL MVP Aaron Judge due to a calf injury.
Rasmussen struck out 10 batters and retired 15 consecutive hitters, throwing 69 of 101 pitches for strikes while recording 23 swings and misses against the Yankees lineup.
Catcher Austin Wells ended the no-hit bid with a two-out double in the eighth inning, but Wells was thrown out at third base attempting to stretch the hit into a triple.
Postseason no-hitters remain rare, with only three in history: Don Larsen in 1956, Roy Halladay in 2010, and four Houston pitchers in 2022, while the Yankees' bats have struck out 10 times so far in this series.
