Yankees rookie Spencer Jones strikes out twice (and scores) in one wild inning
Elias Sports Bureau said no player had ever scored in a postseason inning he started and ended by striking out.
New York Yankees rookie Spencer Jones made baseball history in Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series on Wednesday, becoming the first player to strike out starting and ending a postseason inning in which he also scored.
Completing a two-game sweep, the Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 9-2 to advance in the postseason and set up a Division Series matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays.
After swinging over Garrett Crochet's wild pitch, Jones reached base leading off the sixth inning and scored during a six-run rally, then struck out against Garrett Whitlock to end the frame.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, "Oh, he's safe," regarding a pivotal moment, while The Elias Sports Bureau confirmed no player had ever scored in a postseason inning they started and ended by striking out.
Ahead of their ALDS series against the Rays, Jones shared his excitement on Instagram, where his post garnered over 20,000 likes in less than 24 hours.
