Grand tribute, sombre farewell: How China remembered Jiang Zemin and Zhu Rongji over two days
China marked late President Jiang Zemin’s birth centenary on Monday (Aug 17) and bid farewell the next day to former Premier Zhu Rongji in two major ceremonies held just 24 hours apart.
China is commemorating its former leaders Zhu and Jiang. The government appreciates their merits - while once fearing losing control through the reforms of its era. By Jörg Endriss.
On August 18, the remains of former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji were cremated at Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing. Han Zheng, one of the seven members of the Politburo Standing Committee and Vice President of China, attended the ceremony to pay his respects. Even Li Ruihuan and Hu Jintao, who were absent from the memorial service for former CCP leader Jiang Zemin the previous day, sent wreaths.
