Australia’s Optus Apologises for Outage that Disrupted Emergency Calls
Victoria Police completed welfare checks after an Optus outage left 39 Triple Zero calls struggling to connect, officials said.
On Friday, an Optus network outage disrupted 39 Triple Zero calls in Victoria, prompting the telecom carrier to apologize on Saturday for the 76-minute technical glitch affecting emergency services.
The technical failure impacted voice-calling services across Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory, with customers experiencing intermittent call dropouts during the incident.
Victoria Police completed around 40 welfare checks on impacted callers following the outage, confirming there were "no adverse outcomes or issues of note" in a statement.
Senior minister Chris Bowen called the disruption "deeply concerning," stating it is an obligation for telecommunications companies to keep Triple Zero technology in proper working order.
Repeated failures have increased scrutiny of Australia's telecommunications networks, with Optus facing a $12 million fine and regulatory lawsuits over past emergency call connectivity failures.
