Braxton Ashcraft Works 8 Efficient Innings, Oneil Cruz Homers as Pirates Top Tigers 4-1
Oneil Cruz returns after missing 2 months with a left hand fracture, and Pittsburgh adds his 14 home runs and 21 stolen bases for the playoff push.
On Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates activated outfielder Oneil Cruz from the 60-day injured list, ending his two-month absence from the lineup. The move provides critical roster depth ahead of their series against the Detroit Tigers.
Cruz suffered non-displaced fractures of the fourth and fifth metacarpals while sliding into home plate during a June 6 loss to the Atlanta Braves. He completed a six-game rehab assignment between Triple-A Indianapolis and Double-A Altoona before activation.
In his first game back on Tuesday, the 6-foot-7, 248-pound outfielder crushed a 422-foot home run for his 15th homer of the season. The Pirates defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-1 at PNC Park.
Pitcher Braxton Ashcraft struck out four while allowing five hits over eight efficient innings during the victory. The win keeps Pittsburgh 6.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the final National League Wild Card spot.
General Manager Ben Cherington noted the recovery was difficult but emphasized listening to Cruz about his readiness. With Pittsburgh 6.5 games back, the outfielder's power hitting is pivotal for the National League Central race.
