Pentagon: 153 Civilians Killed in 2025 Yemen Strikes
The assessment says 243 others were wounded, and 15 additional incidents in Yemen remain under review.
On Monday, the Pentagon submitted a report to Congress acknowledging that military operations in 2025 killed 153 civilians and injured 243, attributing all confirmed casualties to three airstrikes against Houthi militants in Yemen.
Critics denounced the document as a "total whitewash" for excluding casualties from maritime strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific, where U.S. operations have killed more than 200 people since September 2025.
Under War Secretary Pete Hegseth, the Pentagon gutted Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response programs by 90%, with Hegseth vowing to focus on "maximum lethality, not tepid legality."
Government officials blasted the report as "a... joke," while the Trump administration characterizes boat strike victims as "narco-terrorists"—claims the American Civil Liberties Union calls "unsubstantiated, fear-mongering."
The ongoing Iran conflict raises concerns that undercounting civilian harm will obscure casualties, though the Pentagon is reportedly considering restoring some roles cut earlier this year.
