Pakistan government to challenge Imran Khan hospital move, says law minister
The government says the ruling conflicts with prison law and will seek a review after the court also ordered doctor access and twice-weekly calls with his sons.
Pakistan's government announced plans to challenge a Supreme Court order directing authorities to move former Prime Minister Imran Khan to Islamabad's private Shifa International Hospital, with Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar arguing the ruling is "not within four walls of the law."
Issued Tuesday, the Supreme Court directive followed concerns over Khan's deteriorating health, including significant vision loss in his right eye; he has been jailed in Rawalpindi since August 2023 following multiple convictions.
Khan's son, Kasim, said his father's health was "all that mattered," urging the government to "adhere to the court orders...allows calls and issues our visas to Pakistan simply so we can come and see him." He and his brother Sulaiman live in London and have not seen their father since 2022.
Welcoming the ruling, his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party demanded it be implemented "immediately, fully, and without delay," while the government's challenge risks sparking public discontent over treatment of the former prime minister.
All but one of Khan's convictions have been suspended or overturned, with appeals pending in the remaining case, reflecting ongoing friction between the government and the former prime minister over cases spanning state gifts to alleged incitement.
The Pakistan government has withdrawn its petition challenging the Supreme Court's order to transfer former Prime Minister Imran Khan to a hospital. The government took this step following objections from the Supreme Court Registrar's Office. The petition can now be refiled after the objections have been addressed. Meanwhile, the way has been cleared for Imran Khan to be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for treatment.
