Organic apple sauce recalled over elevated mold compounds
The company said no illnesses have been reported and customers may return the 23-ounce jars for a refund or replacement.
- Wakefern Food Corp recalled Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce after FDA monitoring revealed elevated levels of patulin, a mold-derived mycotoxin. The recall affects 23-ounce jars bearing UPC 04119005677 with a best-by date of June 16, 2027.
- Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by molds that grow on damaged or bruised apples. The FDA limits the substance to 50 parts per billion in apple products; this recall occurred because detected levels exceeded those safety thresholds.
- Affected products were distributed through ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage, and Fairway Market. Although Wakefern operates more than 380 supermarkets across multiple states, the company has not disclosed a complete state-by-state distribution list.
- Customers who purchased the recalled applesauce can return it to the store for an immediate refund or replacement, said Maureen Gillespie, spokesperson for Wakefern Food Corp. Consumers with questions can call 1-800-746-7748.
- No illnesses or injuries have been reported since the FDA published the announcement on September 22. The company confirmed that no other products sold at these supermarkets are included in the recall.
