Renton Places One-Year Moratorium on Data Centers
The board said the pause will give officials time to write rules after unanimous support, and it could be extended if needed.
On Tuesday, the Oneida County Board unanimously voted to approve a one-year moratorium on new data centers, halting acceptance of development applications while officials draft zoning regulations.
Oneida County Board Chair Scott Holewinski argued the measure is essential to "protect the water" and public interests, noting the county currently lacks specific ordinances for large-scale data center developments.
According to the World Resources Institute, modern AI data centers can consume electricity equivalent to 100,000 homes and up to 300,000 gallons of water daily, requiring extensive cooling and backup power systems.
The ordinance excludes the City of Rhinelander, which manages its own zoning, alongside Sugar Camp, Monico, and Enterprise; officials noted there are currently no active development plans within the county.
Across Wisconsin, counties including Green, Dane, and Dodge have enacted similar moratoriums amid a lack of state or federal regulations, as Eric Rempala of Oneida County Clean Water Action remarked the state is learning quickly.
