Bridge Under Construction Collapses in Old Town
Two people were reported injured as the bridge gave way during a concrete pour, and officials said the injuries were not life-threatening.
On Thursday, August 13, 2026, sections of the Llewellyn Estes Bridge in Old Town collapsed around 2 p.m. while a construction crew poured concrete for the bridge deck.
Construction on a replacement bridge has been ongoing since 2023, and the Maine Department of Transportation is currently assessing the situation to determine a cause.
Old Town assistant fire chief Mike Hildreth reported one person was hospitalized with a leg injury, while two others received on-scene treatment; resident Tony Dimoulas heard a "very loud sound" and initially feared a crane toppled.
The temporary bridge, in use since 2024, sustained no damage, and traffic reopened by 3 p.m. Thursday; however, Orono officials warned drivers of potential delays on Route 2.
Old Town Police Chief David White expressed relief that injuries were not life-threatening, stating, "Thank God, none of that occurred," regarding potential entrapment near the Stillwater River.
