Man jailed for '£5 row' knife murder after near-identical crime in Romania
Jurors rejected Neamtu’s self-defense claim after hearing he had previously been jailed in Romania for a similar stabbing over money.
On Friday, Judge Richard Marks KC sentenced construction worker Eugeniu Neamtu, 59, to life in prison with a minimum term of 27 years for murdering his flatmate Gheorghe Trica, 63, in Walthamstow on February 20.
Neamtu previously served 15 years in Romania for a 2006 murder, stabbing housemate Adrian Vas repeatedly in the chest during a drunken row over money; prosecutor Philip Evans KC noted 'striking similarities' between the cases.
Trica was killed over the 'exceptionally trivial fact' of a £5 debt, though Neamtu claimed he acted in self-defense after allegedly being threatened and pushed down stairs during their argument.
The Home Office announced intentions to deport Neamtu, as he failed to declare his previous criminal record when entering the UK as a visitor in September 2023 and was therefore unlawfully in the country.
Judge Marks emphasized Neamtu's dangerousness and lack of remorse, telling him: 'The fact that you killed another man within two or three years from your release underlines how dangerous you are.
