Nigeria Demands Justice Over Death of 3 Nationals in South Africa
The Consulate cited three recent deaths and one earlier shooting case and urged South African authorities to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.
- On Monday, the Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg demanded justice over the deaths of three nationals who died in separate incidents across South Africa between September 18 and 21. Consul-General Amb. Ninikanwa Okey-Uche urged authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding each death.
- Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadu died on September 18 after allegedly jumping from a building at Kenlin Court in Bloemfontein. The Consulate stated he was attempting to escape alleged police harassment and brutality when he fell.
- Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde was shot at Spanata Bar and Grills Night Club in Mamelodi East on September 21, while Christian Hillary Nnaemeka died the same day following an alleged encounter with Xolani Khumalo and his Sizok'thola team in Primrose.
- Okey-Uche also recalled the February 9 death of Emeka Clement Uzor, who was shot during an encounter with Khumalo's reality television crew in Windsor East, Randburg. The Consulate reported no arrests have been made in that case.
- The incidents have raised fresh concerns regarding the safety of Nigerians in South Africa amid xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks. The Consulate stressed that all allegations must be handled through due process, with suspects presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
