Newark Airport getting new safety technology to prevent runway incidents
The FAA says the upgrade will improve aircraft tracking and could reduce delays as part of a $12.5 billion modernization effort.
On Tuesday, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy unveiled a new surface movement radar at Newark Liberty International Airport, a federal effort to improve ground tracking and runway safety.
Newark Airport was widely considered one of the 'worst in America' for delays last summer, plagued by equipment failures and a chronic lack of air traffic controllers.
The new system allows controllers to track aircraft and vehicles on runways during severe weather, which Duffy said 'keeps the American traveling public safer' by preventing potential collisions.
This installation is part of a $12.5 billion modernization project, with Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia confirming that similar technology will soon be implemented at LaGuardia and JFK.
Ongoing modernization efforts continue through 2028, including transitioning more than 300 analog radios to digital systems and training 4,000 new controllers to help manage more than 140 million annual passengers.
