Yura Borisov and Andrew Garfield Enter the Oscar Race With Neon’s ‘Artificial’ Campaign
Neon is backing the OpenAI drama across major Oscar categories, with Andrew Garfield in supporting actor and Yura Borisov in lead actor.
- At the New York Film Festival, Artificial's awards campaign positions Andrew Garfield in the supporting actor category while Yura Borisov, who plays OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, will campaign in lead actor.
- The film traces decades of tech optimism and conflict, with Garfield playing the CEO pushed out of OpenAI. Sixteen years ago, he played a founder in The Social Network and came up short in the supporting actor race.
- Oscar winner Mark Rylance plays Geoffrey Hinton in the supporting race, while Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati competes for supporting actress. While Garfield is the face of marketing, top-billed stars pursuing supporting nominations is not unprecedented, as Meryl Streep did for Into the Woods.
- Behind the camera, director Luca Guadagnino assembled regular collaborators including cinematographer Malik Hassan Sayeed and production designer Stefano Baisi. Producers include David Heyman, a four-time best picture nominee, and Jennifer Fox, an Oscar nominee for Michael Clayton.
- The campaign extends across all major categories, including best picture and original screenplay. Guadagnino, Garfield, and the team now look to see if Artificial can spark their own triumphant return to the Oscar ceremony.
