JI weighs two plans for Islamabad march against petroleum levy

On September 20, Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman launched a 'Super Long March' from Karachi by train toward Islamabad, protesting the petroleum development levy and rising inflation affecting ordinary Pakistanis.
JI staged sit-ins at 510 locations nationwide, including a 35-day protest at Karachi's Governor House, demanding abolition of a levy that generated 1567 billion rupees last year.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif telephoned Rehman from the United States on Tuesday, requesting postponement; Rehman agreed to halt the caravan in Multan pending a formal meeting upon the premier's return.
Government officials warned that no violent group will be allowed to disrupt Islamabad, citing an Islamabad High Court order barring obstruction of public roads, highways and access to essential services.
Separately, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf plans a major march on September 27 to demand the release of founder Imran Khan, adding pressure on the government amid ongoing negotiations with JI.
