Twice in roughly six minutes, Anderlecht escaped against PAOK after two crazy penalty incidents. First, a Greek player entered the penalty area too quickly, causing the equalizer to be disallowed. Subsequently, PAOK was denied a penalty due to a preceding foul.
In a roaring Thessaloniki, Anderlecht did exactly what was needed: win. Mihajlo Cvetkovic's early goal gave the Brussels side a dream start, after which they mainly had to survive. They succeeded thanks to strong organization, a saved penalty by Colin Coosemans, and above all, a great deal of character.
