Most small firms using generic AI tools: SFA survey

The survey found only 30% of firms use customised models, while the SFA says lack of expertise, time and finance is limiting adoption.

  • A Small Firms Association survey of 404 companies in Ireland found that while most small businesses use artificial intelligence, adoption remains "shallow" with 92% relying solely on generic tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot.
  • Only 30% of businesses use customized models, improving from 22% last year, yet 31% of non-users cite "a lack of technical expertise" as their primary barrier to embracing the technology.
  • Among firms incorporating AI, 76 per cent reported increased efficiency, with 55 per cent noting improved decision-making, though uptake is highest in financial and professional services sectors.
  • SFA director David Broderick urged the Government to utilize the National Training Fund to address technical skill deficits, stating owners lack time and staff to deploy AI strategically.
  • A "massive" 31 per cent of businesses have not started using AI—an 11 per cent increase from last year—while 11 per cent plan to investigate within six months and only four per cent reject it entirely.
