Michael Phelps returns poolside with his sons as 8-year-old Beckett eyes swimming
Phelps said he will support Beckett if the 8-year-old chooses swimming, as the family looks for coaches in Phoenix.
Michael Phelps attended the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, Calif., on Wednesday with two of his young sons, Beckett and Maverick, to watch the international competition.
Phelps began swimming at 7 in Baltimore to channel high energy levels and retired Ten years ago following the Rio Olympic games with 23 career gold medals.
Beckett, 8, and Maverick, 6, sat with parents Phelps and Nicole watching two days of the international meet featuring Australia, Canada, and Japan, with Beckett taking keen interest in the racing.
Longtime coach Bob Bowman provided pointers to Beckett during the meet. Phelps noted his son has "more of a sprinter-type stroke," adding he will support Beckett's swimming if he chooses to pursue it.
The family is researching coaches in Phoenix for Beckett's potential training. Phelps stated, "I will never push him into it," emphasizing his commitment to letting his son chart his own path.
The American supernatant, with 23 Olympic medals, lives in a family far from the swimming pools and has condemned the pressure on US selection, a demand that seriously affected his mental health.
